Marjorie Prime
What would you say to someone you’ve lost?
Marjorie is old and her memory is going. To keep her company, she has a Prime: an artificial intelligence that takes the form of her late husband Walter, though young now, the way he was decades ago. Fed details from the family’s recollections, he sits with her and tells her the stories of her own life.
Her daughter Tess isn’t sure what to make of any of it. Watching her mother confide in this younger version of her father stirs up everything unfinished between them, and as Marjorie converses with this perfect version of her past, questions emerge: What do we remember? What do we choose to forget? What can technology really replace? And who decides which version we hold on to?
Spare, funny, and quietly devastating, Marjorie Prime is a play about memory, grief, and the stories we tell to stay close to the people we’ve lost.
